A trio of late 19th/early 20th century metal strong box travel trunks by Griffiths, McAlister Ltd.

Each originally the property of Dr. G. E. McVitie of Keswick, Cumberland.

Dr. McVitie travelled greatly by sea, spending well over a decade in the colonial medical service in Nigeria and other areas of Africa during the 1930s. He then returned to be a general practitioner in Keswick until his retirement.

Each of the trunks has the painted owners name and still bare various ocean liner transport labels from their travels including Elder Dempster Lines.

The two Japanned trunks have the desirable coppered panel interior, whilst the painted green trunk has a simple painted black finish to the interior.

Approximate size for each trunk:-
78.5cm long
30cm high
41cm deep

Ideally we would like to keep these together as it seems the right thing to do, they do form a great storage solution when stacked but also work amazingly as a coffee table, at the foot of a bed etc.

All trunks with both carry handles, all lids closing and locking.

Age related wear to all three trunks as would be expected from a lifetime of use.

Losses to paper transport labels. One Japanned trunk with one locking clasp lacking and interior panel on underside of lid has lifted.

See extensive listing images to gage an idea of the overall condition of each trunk. Please use the zoom function for close inspection.
